RankRider records your drives using GPS and your phone's motion sensors. Session data is stored on your device. We do not sell your data, do not share it with advertisers, and do not require an account to use the app. Your runs belong to you.
01 // Information We Collect
RankRider collects the minimum data necessary to deliver drive recording, performance metrics, and car-class ranking. We collect the following categories of information:
Drive Session Data
- GPS location data: Latitude, longitude, speed, and heading captured throughout your drive session. Used to compute top speed, 0–100 detection, route silhouette, and rank eligibility verification.
- Accelerometer and gyroscope data: Device motion sensor readings used to compute G-force measurements, peak G, average G, and acceleration event detection.
- Session timing: Start time, end time, and duration of each recorded session.
- Derived metrics: Top speed, 0–100 km/h time, peak G-force, average G-force, distance, route silhouette (abstract line without street labels), and any personal best flags.
Car Profile Data
- Vehicle details: Make, model, year, drivetrain type, and modification tags you choose to enter. This information is self-reported and we do not verify it.
- Car photo (optional): If you choose to add a photo of your car, it is stored locally on your device only.
- Mod log entries: Modification tags and the dates you add them.
Ranking Data
- City-level location: Your approximate city is used to assign you to a local ranking pool. We do not store precise home address or exact coordinates persistently.
- Car class assignment: Derived from your car profile and mod tags.
- Validated session metrics: GPS-verified performance stats used to compute your rank position.
Global Leaderboard Data
If you choose to join the global leaderboard, we collect a few extra pieces of information: your username, your drive score, your region or country, and your car's drivetrain type. We collect this so we can rank you against other RankRider players around the world and show your position on the global leaderboard. This information is stored on our servers (we use Firebase to host it), not just on your device. Joining the global leaderboard is optional, and you can opt out at any time from the app's Settings screen — doing so removes your entry and stops any further uploads of this data.
Technical Data
- Crash reports: Anonymous crash logs that do not include personal data, drive session data, or location.
- App performance data: Aggregate, non-identifiable metrics about app startup time and recording reliability.
Information We Do NOT Collect
- Your name, email address, or account credentials (no account required)
- Payment information
- Contacts or social graph data
- Browsing history or data from other apps
- Precise persistent home or work location
02 // How We Use Your Information
We use the data we collect exclusively to operate and improve RankRider. Specifically:
- Drive session recording: GPS and motion data are processed in real time to compute performance metrics and generate your session result card.
- Performance metrics: Derived stats (0–100, top speed, G-force) are stored locally and, when you opt into ranking, uploaded to compute your position.
- Car-class ranking: Validated session data is compared against other users in your car class and city to generate weekly rank positions.
- Personal best tracking: We compare each session against your historical records stored on-device to surface personal best badges.
- Session card generation: Your session stats and route silhouette are rendered into a shareable image on-device. We do not upload the generated card image.
- App stability: Anonymous crash data is used solely to fix bugs and improve reliability.
- Notifications: If you grant permission, we send push notifications for new personal bests and rank position changes only.
We do not use your data for advertising purposes. We do not build behavioral profiles. We do not sell, rent, or broker your personal data to any third party.
03 // Permissions Explained
RankRider requests device permissions only when needed for a specific feature. All permissions are explained in the app at the point of request.
| Permission | When Requested | Purpose | Impact if Denied |
|---|---|---|---|
Location (Always On) |
First tap of "Arm" on Record tab | GPS speed tracking and route silhouette generation during drive sessions. Background mode required so recording continues while phone is in pocket. | Manual session only. No route silhouette. Sessions marked Unverified and excluded from ranking. |
Motion & Fitness |
First tap of "Arm" on Record tab | Accelerometer and gyroscope data for G-force computation and 0–100 km/h detection. | G-force metrics disabled. GPS speed recording continues normally. |
Notifications |
After first completed session | Push notifications for new personal bests and rank position changes. | Silent mode. No push notifications sent. Results viewable in app. |
Camera Optional |
Car profile setup, when adding car photo | Add a photo of your car to your profile. Stored locally only. | Placeholder icon used. No functional impact. |
04 // Data Storage and Security
Drive session data is written to your device's local storage every 5 seconds during recording. This ensures that no run is lost due to app crash or interruption.
Session data stored on-device is protected by your device's operating system security (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore encryption). We do not have access to locally stored session data.
When ranking features are enabled, summary session metrics (not raw GPS traces) are transmitted to our servers over encrypted HTTPS connections. Our servers are hosted within data centers that comply with industry-standard security practices.
We implement technical safeguards including:
- TLS 1.2 or higher for all data transmission
- Encryption at rest for server-stored ranking data
- Access controls limiting employee access to user data
- No raw GPS coordinate storage on our servers — only derived metrics
No method of data transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information.
05 // Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers. Limited sharing occurs only in the following circumstances:
Service Providers
We may share data with third-party service providers who assist in operating RankRider, including crash reporting services and cloud hosting providers. These providers are contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing services to us.
Ranking System
Your car class, city, and validated performance stats are compared against other users to compute rank positions. The local, city-level ranked list displays only car name (no usernames, no identifiers) and the hero performance stat. If you opt into the separate, optional global leaderboard, your username, drive score, region or country, and drivetrain type are shown to other users as described in Section 1 above.
Shareable Cards
When you choose to share a session card, the image is generated on your device and shared through your device's native share sheet. You control where you share it. RankRider does not transmit your card to any social platform on your behalf.
Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of RankRider, our users, or others.
Business Transfer
In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, user data may be transferred. We will notify users of any such change via in-app notice or update to this policy.
06 // Children's Privacy
RankRider is not directed at children under 13 years of age (or under 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these ages.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us at the address below. We will take steps to remove that information from our systems promptly.
The app is designed for performance driving enthusiasts aged 18 and older. Use of the app while driving should always comply with applicable traffic laws. RankRider does not encourage unsafe or illegal driving.
07 // Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: Request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Deletion: Request deletion of your data from our servers. Locally stored data can be deleted by uninstalling the app or using the "Delete All Data" option in Settings.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address in Section 10. We will respond to verifiable requests within 30 days.
California Residents (CCPA)
California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, including the right to know about categories of personal information collected, the right to delete, and the right to opt-out of sale. We do not sell personal information, so the right to opt-out of sale does not apply. To exercise other rights, contact us as described below.
EEA and UK Residents (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom, our legal bases for processing your data are: (a) performance of the app services you requested, (b) your consent for optional features such as notifications and camera, and (c) our legitimate interests in maintaining app security and preventing abuse. You may withdraw consent at any time by revoking the relevant permission in your device settings.
08 // Data Retention
Session data stored on your device persists until you delete it or uninstall the app. You can delete individual sessions or all data from within the app's Settings screen.
